A Story of Strength and Confidence
Encouragement doesn’t always come easily. Sometimes, even the very people you want to help may unintentionally discourage you. But when you stay committed, the results can be truly transformative. When Flora Smally joined Noirs et Fiers, Non à la Dépigmentation, she carried a heavy burden of insecurity. She wore wigs everywhere she went, hiding what she thought no one could ever understand. One day, during our WhatsApp group discussions, she finally opened up about her struggle. We offered her two options: to embrace head wraps or to walk freely with her bald head. Both felt almost impossible for her. Wrapping her head was unfamiliar, and going bald in public came with the fear of judgment. Then, with the encouragement of make-up artist Beverly Damisca and photographer Anthony Tony Tuch Saint-clair, Flora agreed to a photoshoot—both with a head wrap and completely bald. That simple moment became a turning point. Afterward, Flora found the courage to step out in public with her natural bald head. People asked endless questions:
“Why don’t you have hair?”
“Does it not grow?”
“Do you have cancer?”
“Why don’t you let it grow back?” Questions that could have pushed her back into her shell. But instead, Flora chose courage. She no longer lets society’s words define her. Today, she has regained her confidence and self-esteem, standing proudly in her truth.
